Demonstrating the appeal of comic books and movies based on them, the latest comic book-based movie, “Avengers: Infinity War,” earned $305.9 million in its first five days of release.

It only trailed the first five days of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” by about $20 million, but led another comic book-based movie, “Black Panther,” by about $42 million. The next comic-based film will be “Deadpool 2” when it’s released May 18.

In the midst of all the hoopla is Free Comic Book Day this Saturday.

The annual event is held the first Saturday of May to promote reading and comic books.

Chimp’s Comix & Video Games, 919 E. Winona Ave., Suite 4-6, Warsaw, will host Free Comic Book Day locally for the 16th year from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. The annual event started in 2002, with Chimp’s participation beginning in 2003.

For just walking into Chimp’s on Saturday, a person can get two free comics. Additional comics are available to those who donate a nonperishable food item. For every item given, the person receives a free comic. One copy of each comic is permitted, while supplies last.

Non-perishable food item donations go to the Salvation Army. In 2016, the business collected 1,289 items on Free Comic Book Day for the food pantry. A year later, it collected 1,292, according to Chimp’s owner Nick Kelley.

He said there are more than 80 comic book choices this year, including 52 new ones.

Some of the comics being given away this year including “DC Super Hero Girls,” “DC Nation,” “Spider-Man,” “Avengers,” “Star Wars Adventures,” “Pokemon,” “SpongeBob,” “Power Rangers,” “Transformers,” “Street Fighter,” “Dr. Who,” “Overwatch” and “Disney Princess.”

Chimp’s also will be having a sale Saturday. Comics will be 35 percent off back issues, 35 percent off signed comics, 25 percent off graphic novels, all 50-cent comics will be 25 cents each and all $1 books will be 75 cents each. Buy one toy and get one for 50 percent off. Visit Chimp’s Facebook for updates and more sale specials.
