UPLAND — The Taylor University women’s basketball program has signed 2010 Warsaw Community High School graduate Kelci Freds as the newest member of the 2011 recruiting class. Freds transfers to Taylor after spending last season with the University of South Carolina Upstate Spartans. During her freshman season with the Spartans, the 2009-10 Times-Union All-Area Player of the Year played in 22 games, averaging 1.4 points and 0.8 rebounds a game. A 5-foot-6 guard, Freds averaged 15.1 points along with 4.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and two steals per game during her senior season. Setting the school record for 3-pointers in a game (8), a season (60) and a career (180), Freds connected on 41 percent of her 3-point attempts during her senior season. “Kelci is a welcomed addition to our basketball program,” Taylor head coach Tena Krause said. “Her speed and shooting ability will add depth to our guard play and will complement the talent that is already here. “She is a deadly threat from 3-point range and has the capability to score off the dribble as well as defend with tenacity,” Krause added. “She is a great fit for our program and we’re exited for her to join the Taylor family.” A three-time all conference selection, Freds was named to the Indiana Top 100 as a senior as well as being named all-area player of the year her senior year. An All-Academic team and Academic All-State honoree, Freds finished her career seventh on the Warsaw all-time scoring list. “I feel like Taylor will provide academic challenges and can provide all the academic opportunities that I will need to accomplish my goals for the future,” Freds said of her decision to sign with the Taylor Trojans. “I know being at Taylor will help strengthen my relationship with God and I get along well with the girls on the team so I can’t wait for next year.” The daughter of Scott and Sheila Freds, Kelci plans to major in sports management.
