CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Every year, Cedarville University's composition students put on a concert to showcase what they've learned during the academic year.
For the first time, this year's composition pieces involved the central theme: idols in American culture.
The concert featured the work of seven student composers. Each student composed a piece that highlights a specific idol in American culture. The composition work was complemented by short acting pieces.
Cedarville University student Jordan Fredericks, a junior music composition major from Warsaw, was the student lead for the concert. In addition to taking charge of the project, he composed a piece for the concert on the idolatry of people.
"I have had several good conversations about how people can become idols in our lives," said Fredericks. "Sometimes, people can value the presence, relationship or collection of other people more than we value our relationship with God, making it an idol in our lives."
He continued, "I love composing because I love creating things and being active with my creativity. Secondly, it allows me to express my emotions and thoughts easier. Sometimes, it is much more difficult for me to express my thoughts and feelings in regular conversation, but somehow music allows an outlet for me to talk about some difficult stuff I go through."
