WABASH – Frederick G. Biggs, 80, of Wabash, died at 12:05 a.m. Oct. 6, 2012, at Wabash Skilled Care Center.
He was born Nov. 16, 1931, in Converse, to Dana and Hildred Miller Biggs. On July 26, 1953, in Amboy, he married Margaret Givens, who died Nov. 20, 1992. He then married Ruth Ann Boyer in 1993 and in December they would have celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary.
He graduated from Converse High School in 1949.
He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951 and was a veteran of the Korean War. While in Korea, he was a member of the 1st Marine Division assigned to an amphibian unit where he drove the landing craft commonly referred to as the “DUK”. He was honorably discharged in 1953 with the rank of sergeant. In 1954, he joined the Indiana State Police. He was assigned to Wabash County as a trooper. In 1971 he was promoted to sergeant and was made public information officer for all counties in the Peru Post District. After retirement from the state police in 1987, he joined the Indiana State Pharmacy Board. He was responsible for inspecting all pharmacies in the northern third of the state. In 2007 he retired from the State Pharmacy Board and received the “Distinguished Hoosier Award” from Governor Mitch Daniels. On the occasion of his second retirement he was the second longest serving employee of the State of Indiana.
He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Wabash, where was also a member of the men’s group; a Fraternal Order of Police member for 33 years and past president for five years; the Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Association; the Wabash Optimist Club; the Wabash Library Board, where he was also a past president; the Masonic Lodge – Hanna Lodge No. 61, F&A.M; the Scottish Rite – Valley of Fort Wayne; the Mizpah Shrine – Valley of Fort Wayne; the American Legion; and the Wabash High School Music Boosters, where he was also a past president.
Also surviving are a sister, Betty Smyser, Fort Wayne; two sons, Brent (and spouse Valerie) Biggs, Fort Wayne, and Kenneth (and spouse Lori) Biggs, Warsaw; a daughter, Beth (and spouse Steve) Himes, Terre Haute; a stepson, Jeff (and spouse Suzi) Boyer, Noblesville; a stepdaughter, Janet (and spouse Greg) Stuckey, Washington, Ind.; 11 grandchildren: Josh (and spouse Marci), Matt, Michael, Kristian, Kameron (and spouse Jessica) Biggs; Evan and Cindy Himes; Jason Boyer; Jessica (and spouse Steve) Klabak; and Jarred (and spouse Layne) and Taylor Stuckey; and a great-grandchild, Brodie Glen Biggs. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Brian Keith; five brothers: Harvey D, Paul, Don, Bob and Richard; and a granddaughter, Klover Nicole.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ United Methodist Church, 477 N. Wabash St., Wabash, with the Rev. Phil Lake officiating. Burial will be in Falls Cemetery, Wabash.
