BOURBON - Voters in the Triton school district will fill two posts on the school board in the Nov. 5 election.
Four candidates are running for election: Incumbents Steve Feldman and Steven Sechrist, as well as Richard Walter and Kevin Boyer.
Feldman, of Bourbon, is unopposed in the election for District 3. He has served four years on the board and wishes "to continue having input into meeting the challenges that come up at Triton."
His goals for Triton include "improving vocational education for students not going to college."
Feldman is a farm manager with a background in accounting. He and his wife, Donna, have two children.
The remaining candidates are vying for the at-large seat on the board.
Sechrist, a 10-year school board veteran, believes serving on the board is a way "to give something back to this community which I am privileged to be a part of."
He, too, believes in the importance of vocational training and would like to see efforts in this area expanded. He is also concerned that Triton stay on top of technology, especially computer literacy, while teaching basic skills of reading, writing and math.
A lifetime area resident, Sechrist graduated from Etna Green High School in 1963. He served as an aircraft electrician with the U.S. Army in Vietnam and is employed as a printer.
He lives in Etna Green with his wife, Joyce. They have three children.
Walter, from Etna Green, believes "the school system should be a reflection of the community that it represents." He feels parents have less input in policy decisions, and thinks the board should spend "just a little more time listening to patrons and a little less time listening to our government agencies."
He says that, while continuing to improve the quality of education, "we need to remember what made education work in the past. There are many things we can learn by looking at what was successful."
A graduate of Triton High School, Walter holds a supervisory position at Holiday Rambler. He and his wife, Sandra, have three children.
Boyer is seeking election to provide voters with a choice: In the last school board election, the incumbents were unopposed. He feels the corporation "must continue to address the balance of quality and cost of public education."
Boyer feels an obligation "to offer my education and experience in situations when those qualities might be beneficial." He is a CPA with six years of public accounting experience and 11 years of administration in the health care industry. He is CEO of The Medical Group of Michigan City. He also has three years' audit experience with a Michigan school corporation.
He lives in Bourbon with his wife, Ruth. They have four children.
