NORTH MANCHESTER - Manchester College's Hall of Fame will welcome new members, including Rex Weiland, Gary Goshert, Andy Butterbaugh and Karl Merritt, in a Dec. 4 ceremony.
Three were members of the 1971 golf team, which is entering the school's hall of fame under the category of "honored team." The team, comprising Richard Buck ('74), Butterbaugh ('72), Goshert ('73), Ron Karn ('73), Sam Lower ('74), Randy Olinger ('73), Tom Walton ('73), Weiland ('71) and coach Jack Jarrett ('56), will be honored. The team finished first at the NAIA District 21 Tournament and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament, where it finished 18th overall.
Butterbaugh, Goshert, Weiland and Merritt still live in the area.
Goshert, who coaches varsity boys basketball and boys golf at Manchester, resides in Ligonier with his wife, Cynthia. Butterbaugh is co-owner's of Butterbaugh's in North Manchester. He and his wife, Betty, reside in North Manchester. Weiland is a physician in North Webster. He and his wife, Laura, live in North Manchester.
Merritt has been involved with Manchester athletics for the past 22 years. Before graduating in 1960, Merritt was a three-time letterwinner in basketball and a four-year letterwinner in baseball. He coached the men's basketball team from 1979-1981 and has been the public address announcer for Spartan athletic events since 1982. He and his wife, Bonnie, live in North Manchester.
Also being inducted are Paul "PW" Burton, Bryan Richardson and Brenda Ramsey.
Burton, who graduated in 1958, excelled as an offensive and defensive tackle for the Spartans. He was known for his toughness as he was the only player on the team to never wear a facemask during games. Burton has served as the Cleveland Browns statistician for several years and continues to do so today. He has served as statistician during the Super Bowl as well.
Richardson, who graduated from Manchester in 1983, was a four-year varsity letterwinner in track and field. Ramsey, who graduated in 1992, was a cross country and track and field standout who was named an All-American after she set a school record in the 3000M during the outdoor nationals.
