Four Local Educators Honored For Work

Three local educators were honored over the weekend for their work, and a fourth was honored in June for his commitment to education.

One of the honorees will go on to national competition for her award.

Saturday, the Indiana Association for Career and Technical Education held its 2007-08 Awards Luncheon and Program. The luncheon was part of a larger conference.

Diana Yarian, Warsaw Area Career Center, received the IACTE Outstanding Career and Technical Educator award. As the state winner, her name now will be submitted for the 2009 national technical educator award.

"One, I was overwhelmed. I knew I was getting this award, but I didn't know the significance of this award. I was in awe that I was getting this award," Yarian said. "I didn't know that I was now the candidate for national recognition."

She said she recognizes part of it is for the non-traditional career workshop she helps put on for sophomore high school female students annually. The Non-traditional Employment for Women workshop has received a lot of recognition since its inception. Previously, the state gave NEW workshop a state award, and Yarian received an award from the Kosciusko/Warsaw Chamber of Commerce for her work in bringing the workshop about.

"I think that has gotten me the main recognition from people around Indiana," she said.

Yarian is in her 13th year with Warsaw Schools.

"It takes the work of a lot of people for me to get that award. It's just not myself, it takes a team. And a great director that felt I needed to be recognized, and that was Bill Kovach," Yarian said.

Kovach received an award, too, over the weekend. He was honored with an Award of Merit from the Indiana ACTE.

Ivy Tech Warsaw's Mary Marty was handed a Citation Award.

In June, Phil Metcalf, director for Wawasee Career and Technical Education Cooperative, received the director of the year award from the IACTE. The IACTE District annual meeting was in Brown County.
