Four hurt in Friday crash

Posted
Four people were injured in a rear-end collision on eastbound U.S. 30 Friday afternoon, with one driver airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital with major injuries.
Police and medics were called just before 4:30 p.m. Friday to the intersection of 30 and Ind. 15., where crews arrived to find a sedan battered and resting in the median and an SUV with back-end damage.
Police believe a 2000 Ford Focus driven by Kylee M. Sponseller, 20, of 5028 S. CR 450W, Claypool, was eastbound on U.S. 30 approaching Ind. 15 when she looked down to change the radio station, according to the crash report. Sponseller said she looked up to see cars stopped ahead of her, and made an attempt to swerve, but could not avoid striking the back of a 2003 Ford Expedition driven by Anthony P. Bergman of Ocean Springs, Miss.
The impact left Sponseller with fractures and dislocations throughout her body, the report said. She was wearing a seatbelt, and the Focus’ airbag deployed.
The Expedition’s passengers - a 26-year-old woman and a 4-year-old boy - each complained of neck pain as a result of the collision and were taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital. Bergman complained of back pain, but was not hospitalized.
Officials estimated the damage of the collision at $5,000-$10,000.
