Four Area Wrestlers Advance At State Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS -ÊSix local wrestlers traveled to Market Square Arena for Friday's state competition.

Four of the six won their first-round matches to stay alive.

After Friday's matches, the number of wrestlers still competing has been sliced from 224 to 112.

Wawasee sent three to state. All three advanced to the next round with Friday wins.

Wawasee's Chet Wortinger (119 pounds) scored a 21-4 tech fall over Richmond's Billy Haager. Teammate Kevin Carr (160) defeated Whiteland's Chad Wilkerson 9-3. Jamie Salazar (275) took care of Chesterton's Steve Jenkins in 1:48.

One of three Warsaw wrestlers won a Friday match to move on. Warsaw's Matt Zellers (152) held on to beat Warren Central's Bobby Dinn 9-7. Teammate Adam Harter (112) lost to Lake Central's Ryan Alb 13-1, and Michigan City's Ryan Lee (275) pinned Joey Navarro in 3:38.

Rochester's Dusten Roe (119) pulled off one of the biggest upsets by beating New Albany's Joey Coffey 9-5. Coffey had been ranked No. 2 in the state.
