INDIANAPOLIS - Former principal of Tippecanoe Valley High School Charlie E. Mills was named as the 2002 high school principal of the year by the Indiana Association of School Principals for District 2.

Mills was principal of TVHS for 13 years. He spent 26 years in school administration and 21 years as a classroom teacher.

He retired from education this year, Tippecanoe Valley Superintendent Dr. Karen S. Boling said.

"He loved his job. He loved education," she said.

She was sorry for his leaving, she said.

IASP District 2 includes Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall, Pulaski, St. Joseph and Starke counties.

Mills played a key role in providing leadership for accreditation with the North Central Association, which holds the highest level of accreditation, Boling said. Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. is one of 13 school districts nationally with the accreditation.

Mills was a member of the Kosciusko County Junior Achievement Board of Directors for 11 years and secretary for 10 years. He is a four-year member of Gold Wing Road Riders Association.

In 1987, he received the Toastmasters International Competent Toastmaster citation. In 1989, he received the Foelinger Award for Excellence. The award is given to outstanding economics teachers.

The recognition ceremony is Nov. 24 during IASP's annual Fall Professional Conference in Indianapolis.
