Former Manchester Student Charged with Causing Newborn's Death

NORTH MANCHESTER – A former Manchester University student was arrested Monday for murder and neglect of a dependent causing death.
Mikayla Munn, 21, Elkhart, allegedly gave birth in the bath tub in her dorm room March 8. According to Wabash County Prosecutors, police received a call from Munn before midnight March 8. When police arrived, they found Munn and the infant in the dorm room. The infant was not breathing.
Both were taken to a hospital, where Munn was treated and the child was pronounced dead.
Munn was arrested at her home in Elkhart and booked into the Wabash County Jail. Officers from Manchester assisted Indiana State Police with the investigation.
Manchester University Media Relations announced Monday that they will not provide comments for the case as they “do not believe it is the University’s role to release any details involving the investigation by outside law enforcement agencies, with whom we are cooperating fully.” Officials said Munn had withdrawn from the university and was not a student when she was arrested.
Manchester University President Dave McFadden said, “Although speculating about the case is a natural reaction in circumstances like this, please take pause before doing so. We do not have all of the facts, and one of the most sacred principles in the American criminal justice system is the presumption of innocence.”
