Food Bank Provides Food To Those In NeedPIERCETON – Food Bank of Northern Indiana held a bonus distribution in the parking lot of Pierceton Elementary School Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Salvation Army is cooperating with the Food Bank of Northern Indiana as The Salvation Army is the contact point to set up distribution sites in Kosciusko County, said Ken Locke, corps administrator of The Salvation Army in Warsaw and director of the Greater Warsaw Ministerial Association.

The food comes through a grant through the USDA, Locke said. “There’s extra food.”

Volunteers, which included Indiana National Guardsmen, were ready to give people 436 roughly 30-pound boxes of food, as well as bread and apples, Locke said. It was first come, first served, where people would drive up and the food would be loaded into people’s cars.

“We don’t want them getting out of their cars, we want it to be as safe as possible,” Locke said.

If all of the food was not given away, what remained would be packed up and used at other distribution sites.

“We’re just to supplement people’s budgets,” Locke said, as some people have lost their jobs, some people have had other expenses that have come up. “We’re just trying to get food out to people.”

“Each family has to be represented by an adult in the vehicle,” he said. “We’re not doing deliveries or anything.”

There is no income requirement and no registration process, Locke said.

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana will be giving out food at different locations to at least the end of May. Locke said the Food Bank has been giving food out for approximately four weeks. The next day is scheduled for May 6 at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds.
