Florence Juanita Cutshaw Johnson

ROCHESTER - Florence Juanita Cutshaw Johnson, 96, of 1081 W. Ridge Road, Rochester, was surrounded by her loving family as she passed away at 7:40 p.m. July 17, 2010, at Hickory Creek, Rochester.

She was born March 27, 1914, in Fulton County to Arthur J. and Lucinda Sayger Cutshaw. On Aug. 4, 1950, in Macy, she married the love of her life, Emerson Johnson, who preceded her in death.

She completed high school and continued on to college to study nursing. Following her graduation, as a registered nurse, she began her nursing career at City Hospital, Indianapolis. Later she joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II with the Army nurse corps. On Dec. 31, 1946, she was honorably discharged with the rank and known to all as 1st Lt. Florence J. Cutshaw. Many local residents remember her assisting Dr. Dean K. Stinson as his office nurse from 1958-80. She was a member of Macy United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star of Akron and the District No. 18 Nurses Association. She enjoyed working with her hands. She knitted many warm creations of scarves, gloves and afghans for family and special friends. She also made custom plastic canvas artwork. She was a friend to the hummingbirds, feeding them and observing their lively behaviors. She also collected hummingbird statues and memorabilia.

Surviving are a daughter, Sue Anne Brubaker, Rochester; a son, Dick (and spouse Sharon) Johnson, Warsaw; a sister, Margaret Stanton, Rochester; five grandchildren: Ladonna (and spouse John) Mitchell, Kimberly (and spouse Derrek) Holloway and Ben Brubaker, all of Rochester; Brian (and spouse Paige) Johnson, Akron; and Sondra Patton, Warsaw; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Zoe Smith and Donna O'Brien; a brother, Paul Cutshaw; a brother-in-law, Bill Stanton; and a son-in-law, Jim Brubaker, who died in 2003.

A graveside service was at 10 a.m. Friday at Athens Cemetery with the Rev. Phil Pratt officiating with military honors by members of Manitou Veterans of Foreign Wars and LeRoy Shelton American Legion

Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester, is in charge of arrangements.
