Fixed Elections

Editor, Times-Union:

Indiana doesn't require any voter to indicate their political party affiliation, if any, as a requirement to registering to vote. This means that voters of all affiliations can vote without political restraints in the elections. Yes, but when I voted in the last primary I was forced to choose one party or the other to get a ballot.

People should know that political parties in power in the various states maneuver the election laws to ensure either one or the other stay in power. When I ran for Congress in California I saw the maps they use. The party will spend money in one district and not support their candidate at all in another district. This ensures older party hacks all the support. The Republicans and Democrats have a sweet little deal going around the country. Fixed? Oh, no, they wouldn't do such a thing.

As an independent thinker and voter I am informed by the Secretary of State of Indiana that to have my name actually on the ballot, I must have 2 percent of the registered voters who voted in the last election for Secretary of State. This seems like a very odd out-of-the-hat rule. I guess they used the dart board on that one. So in my case, I must get 4,000 signatures of registered voters by the end of June. Which without a party machine behind me is impossible, or nearly so.

In Fort Wayne, on Thursday night, they are having a candidate's meeting, but only for Republican candidates. Since there appears to be just that one major Democrat running for that seat and possibly a libertarian, why isn't everybody included in one big meeting? I will be there, if nothing more than to see how this one-party machine really gets down and dirty. Oh well, I have been thrown out of better places.

You can register up until 29 days before the November election. With a low voter turn out the Independent could win. Vote Independent and if they aren't watching, vote often.
