Five Alcohol Licenses Renewed

Posted
The Alcohol Beverage Commission approved three licenses for businesses with violations.

Liquid Assets was renewed with two violations. One was for allowing a minor to loiter and one for the sale of alcohol to a minor.

Manager Michael Gilbert said the violation took place Feb. 1 and the employee who made the sale was put on probation.

The store paid a $500 fine.

Gilbert said the store adopted the policy to card all customers before the new state law kicked in requiring the same.

Gilbert said to his knowledge it was the first violation for the store in the 12 years he's been there.

Owen's, 302 W. Market St., was renewed after a violation of sale to a minor on Feb. 4.

Store manager Terry Woodling said the violation took place before he worked there, but the employee who made the sale is no longer employed with Owen's.

Owen's paid a $500 fine and was renewed, and Woodling said it was the first violation on record, according to Owen's corporate office.

Excise officer April Tackett advised Woodling to make sure Owen's had a letter of extension because its license expires Oct. 15.

The renewal still has to be approved by the state beverage commission and that won't happen before the 15th.

Wawasee Bowling Lanes was given a renewal with three violations: allowing a minor to loiter, sale to a minor and no employee permit.

Manager Jeff Yoder was present at Thursday's meeting and said the day the violations occurred, which he believed to be in May, he was the only one working at the bowling alley.

After he got a large to-go food order, Yoder said he was in the kitchen while some regular customers sat at the bar.

After hearing someone come in, he peeked his head out and saw a man standing in line.

One of the regular customers had gotten a beer and soda for the man and an underage customer.

Yoder said he was in a hurry and failed to card before making the sale.

Yoder said they have adopted the policy of carding everyone who orders alcohol, and he put up signage to keep customers out from behind the bar.

Yoder said the bowling alley paid a $600 fine.

The beverage commission also approved the renewal of licenses for the Silver Inn Tavern in Silver Lake and Viking Liquors in Mentone. Both businesses' licenses were renewals without violations.

In a hearing continued from last month, a transfer of ownership of The Boathouse was completed for Petro Christos.

Christos is now the sole owner of the restaurant in Winona Lake. He said the transfer was to reflect that his business partners sold off their shares to spend more time with family.

The hearing was continued to allow proper signage about the transfer to be displayed at the restaurant per state law.

A hearing for Pizza Hut, 3314 U.S. 30E, Warsaw, was continued because no representation was present for Pizza Hut.

Pizza Hut had a violation of selling alcohol to a minor.
