Editor, Times-Union: Have you ever gone fishing before? I’ve been on many fishing trips and caught quite a few fish, my best being eight bluegill and one bass. I think people should go fishing more often.
First, fishing can provide delicious food. Catching the fish and cooking them is tasty, which, of course, would be why seafood is so popular. There are plenty of trout, bluegill, bass, walleye, etc. around Kosciusko County. You can fry fish, stew them, barbecue, or even bread them.
Second, fishing also teaches us many valuable skills on how to survive in the wilderness, which we would otherwise not know. If you’ve ever read “Robinson Crusoe”, you would find that he takes the ship’s fishing pole and uses it to catch fish, which he uses to sustain himself. Just think about not knowing how to fish and being stranded on an island. Wouldn’t that put Weight Watchers out of business like a shot?
Lastly, fishing can provide family time. Fishing is a time-consuming hobby and takes patience. Just waiting around paves the way to discuss family matters.
So, the next time you are in the dumps of summer, grab a pole, visit the local bait shop and hit the pond. All these reasons of food, skill, and free family time were enough to convince me, and I hope they will be enough to convince you to go fishing more often also.
