SIDNEY - Quick response from a nearby firefighter saved a barn that caught fire early this morning.
Sidney Fire Department Chief Kevin Wagoner said firefighter Jon Engelhaupt lives near where the fire occurred and he "got there pretty quick (and) extinguished 80 percent of the fire and saved that barn."
Wagoner said tax dollars were used to purchase fire extinguishers to be carried in all 16 firefighters' personal vehicles. That $500 purchase, Wagoner said, probably saved a $30,000 to $40,000 barn.
Firefighters were called to the barn at the George W. Geaugh residence, 6203 CR 750S, at 4:40 a.m. today. The fire started when the power line shorted out at the point where it enters the barn.
There was smoke showing when firefighters arrived on the scene and the fire was under control within 10 minutes.
Damage is estimated at $2,000. No injuries were reported.
