In response to Sarah Lowe's letter concerning gun control on Nov. 12, 2008:
I agree with you that an 8-year-old should not have been allowed to shoot a fully automatic Uzi. I disagree with you that we need a law controlling such a case. What was needed in this instance is common-sense adults who should have not allowed a child to handle this type of firearm.
On the same day that this unfortunate accident happened with a firearm, I wonder how many other unfortunate accidents happened to children in the United States that did not involve firearms, i.e. auto accidents, bicycle accidents, pedestrian accidents, etc.
Due to a biased media, what the public read or heard was only the firearms accident.
I have worked in the firearms industry for 41 years. My opinion is that we do not need more firearm laws. The current firearm laws need to only be enforced, which they are not. The reason, as I understand it, is lack of manpower. More gun laws will only infringe on my right to bear arms and do nothing to stop the people who commit crimes with firearms.
Sarah, you say that you are not interested in guns. I know several women whom I have heard say the same thing. They tried the firearms sport and now enjoy shooting, hunting and being in the outdoors with a firearm.
