North Webster and Leesburg firefighters finish extinguishing a pre-dawn house fire today at 28 EMS T48 Lane, Syracuse. The fire was reported at 3:12 a.m. by a neighbor. Inside the house, a fireman found the body of Esme Phillips, 48. Police say the death and fire do not appear suspicious but Squad 70, the county's arson investigation team, will investigate as is protocol for all fatal fires. County coroner Larry Ladd said an autopsy will be performed, but all signs indicate she died of smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire was not immediately determined. No damage estimates were available. Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union
