Fire House Plans Advance

Posted

Plain Township has purchased 3 acres outside of Leesburg to build a new township building.

The property, which is owned by David Hollar and LaDoit Hollar, is located at the corner of Baseline Road and Armstrong Road. Cost of the land is $34,333, which is the average of two appraisals as required by law.

The new township building will house the fire station, the emergency medical service, the township assessor's office and the trustee's office. Township trustee Don Boggs said the new building will be roughly 50 feet by 160-180 feet.

Boggs said the current fire station, which measures 40 feet by 50 feet, is too small to hold needed equipment. He said an additional tanker is needed, as the last one was purchased in 1974.

The township is renting space for the EMS building and the assessor's office, and the trustee's office is in Boggs' home. The larger building will allow all township offices to be housed in the same area, and may also save the town money. "What it's costing us for these other buildings will more than take care of maintenance on the new building," Boggs said.

Boggs said he does not expect the township tax rate to go up more than 7 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. The township's current rate is 22.7.

The township must wait on soil borings and surveys before proceeding with the design phase of the project.
