Fire Hits House In Warsaw

An early morning fire today caused significant damage to a house across the street from a Warsaw school.

At 4:02 a.m. the Warsaw-Wayne Township Fire Territory was called to 913 E. Smith St., at an intersection with Wood Street and across from Lakeview Middle School. Max Kinsey, public information officer for the fire department, said the fire started in the breezeway of the home and spread to the attic.

One male occupant was asleep when the fire started, and escaped injury. Two other family members were not home at the time. Kinsey did not know if the occupant of the home is an owner or a renter.

Kinsey said the damage was estimated at around $30,000. Winona Lake Fire Department, Warsaw Police Department and the Red Cross assisted on the scene.
