ATWOOD - An unknown number of chickens was lost in a Saturday morning fire at a Creighton Bros. property on CR 650W, near Atwood.
Atwood Fire Department was called to the five-chicken house complex at 7:29 a.m. Two employees attempted to put out the fire with extinguishers, but were unsuccessful. One of the employees reportedly suffered smoke inhalation in the fire.
One of the five chicken houses, which contain a total of 80,000 to 100,000 chickens, sustained damaged to about half of the structure. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the other houses in the complex.
A spokesman for the Atwood Fire Department said the chief believed it was a good save by getting the fire stopped.
The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical problem and began in a building beside a generator.
Mentone Fire Department provided a full assist at the scene and Warsaw, Burket and Etna Green fire departments responded with tankers of water.
Firefighters were on the scene for more than four hours, with the last truck leaving the scene at 11:54 a.m.
