It's been four years since the last presidential election, but now it's time again for American voters to change the course of history.

And while the biggest office up for election this year is the president of the United States, there also are many important elections in Indiana, Kosciusko County and the various school districts.

Filing for the 2000 primary in May begins Wednesday and ends Feb. 18 at noon.

To file, a person need only go to the county clerk's office in the Justice Building and file a form for candidacy, according to County Clerk Marsha McSherry. There is no filing fee.

People seeking a seat on a school board must file at the clerk's office in the county where the majority of the school's population is. Those seeking a state office file at the state level, but usually also file locally as a courtesy, McSherry said.

The primary election for Indiana is May 2. The general election is Nov. 7.

In the national election, offices up for election and current officerholders are: president (Bill Clinton); U.S. senator (Richard Lugar); U.S. representative 3rd District (Tim Roemer); and U.S. representative 5th District (Steve Buyer).

Indiana offices up for election and current officeholders include governor (Frank O'Bannon); Indiana state senators in the 9th (Kent Adams), 13th (Robert Meeks) and 18th (Thomas Weatherwax) districts; Indiana state representatives in the 16th (Michael Smith), 18th (David Wolkins) and 22nd (Bill Ruppel) districts; and the attorney general (formerly Jeff Modisett) and superintendent of public instruction (Suellen Reed), both in the general election only.

In Kosciusko County, offices up for election and current officeholders include: Judge of Kosciusko Circuit Court Rex Reed; Clerk of Kosciusko County Marsha McSherry; county treasurer Stephanie Esenwein; coroner Larry Ladd; surveyor Dick Kemper; northern district county commissioner Brad Jackson; middle district county commissioner Eddie Creighton; county council at-large members, Tom Anglin, Lewis Bertsch and Kathryn Teel; and state convention delegates (primary only).

All the local school corporations have board members up for election: Tippecanoe Valley school board, districts 1 and 2, primary only; Wa-Nee school board, Elkhart County, Kosciusko County and at-large, primary only; Whitko school board, primary only, districts 1, 2 and 3; Triton school board, general election only, at-large and district 3; Wawasee school board, general only, districts 1, 2 and 3; and Warsaw school board, general only, districts 3, 4 and 6.
