Filing For Small Town Elections Continues Until Aug. 1

Posted
Only four candidates filed in February for the small town elections in Kosciusko County for 2023.

Democrat Michael D. Searfoss, incumbent, filed for the Leesburg town clerk position, while Democrat Tim Croy, incumbent, filed for Mentone Town Council. Republican Sharon Rancourt is seeking re-election to the Sidney Town Council, while Republican Chauncey Smith is gunning for the Pierceton Town Council.

Filing for the general elections for Claypool, Etna Green, Leesburg, Mentone, North Webster, Pierceton, Sidney and Silver Lake ends at noon Aug. 1 for Republicans, Democrats and Libertarians.

They may have a town convention if there is a contested race within a party. The party will hold a convention to make their selection from those candidates. If there is a contested race between the parties within a town, they will have an election in November for that town. Some towns will not have an election at all because only the set number of candidates filed.

Filing for Warsaw, Syracuse and Winona Lake ended at noon Feb. 3. With no contests for Warsaw, the city will not have a May primary. Winona Lake will have a primary because the clerk-treasurer position is contested, and Syracuse will have an election because the clerk-treasurer position and the District 4 town board seat has a race between three Republican men.

So far, there doesn’t appear to be any contested races for the small towns, but the filing period is several months away.
