Filing For Primary Election Starts Jan. 8

Candidate filing for the May 2020 primary begins Jan. 8 in the office of the county clerk.

The last day to file will be at noon Feb. 7, according to Ann Torpy, clerk for the circuit and superior courts.

Kosciusko County offices that will be up for election next year include all four superior court judges; county clerk, treasurer, coroner and surveyor; northern and middle district county commissioners; three county council at-large seats; state convention delegates for Republican and Democrat parties; and Republican precinct committeemen, according to the county’s website at kcgov.com.

Candidate forms also are available on the website. Superior court judge candidates will file at the Indiana Election Division.

Voter registration ends April 6 for the 2020 primary on May 5. Voter registration ends Oct. 5 for the general election on Nov. 3.

Registration may be done at the county clerk’s office, online at Indiana Voters or at any BMV branch in Indiana. Absentee voting is available.

To vote, a person must be a U.S. citizen, be 18 by the time of the general election and be a resident of their precinct for 30 days prior to the general election. A person does not declare a party affiliation at the time of registration and no person may register for another.

For the primary election, early voting dates and hours will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 7 to May 1; 8 a.m. to noon May 4; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25, and Saturday May 2.

Early voting will take place in the Kosciusko County Justice Building, 121 N. Lake St., Warsaw. Voters should take an Indiana or federal-issued photo ID, but do not need a reason to vote early in-office.

Applications for non-military or overseas voters must be submitted for each primary and general election. Miliary and overseas voters on-going absentee applications will expire Dec. 31 of the year they were filed with the Absentee Voter Board.
