I would like to thank Leslie Swanson for pointing out the shocking, insidious fact that a world run by gays would have no Father's Day.
Except for, of course, families with two fathers, but I suppose he was envisioning more Amazonian She-Warriors and less "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy."
Obviously, when I realized I was a lesbian I had to disown my own father, which is why I made sure to send him a Father's Day card this year, even from New Zealand (where I currently live) and why we speak on the phone at least once a week. Hi, Dad.
Father's Day and Mother's Day are not about gender anymore. Let's face it - even in a majority of heterosexual families children are not afforded the luxury of both parents. Father's Day and Mother's Day are about giving thanks to the people who took care of you and raised you (even when you made that exceedingly difficult). This debate is focused too much on genitalia, and not enough on love.
P.S. If I may speak for the entire world population of homosexuals - we have no interest in being "in control."
