Farmers' Driving

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

Every summer and fall the people of Kosciusko County, and other counties I'm sure, have to put up with tall corn at the corners of county roads. We have to pull half way out into the intersection to look for oncoming traffic, and take a chance of getting hit. Why is this allowed?

Trailer haulers must have an escort if their load is a certain width. Why are farmers allowed to drive their wide combines and tractors without an escort? They take up the entire road! I have had to pull onto someone's lawn to make room for a tractor. And I have tracks in my front yard from them! Why is this allowed?

On Oct. 19, I was driving north on Ind. 15 from Leesburg and met a farm truck hauling loose corn with no tarp on top. My car was pelted with corn! It was worse than driving in hail! There was corn on the road all the way up to CR 1000N! Why is this allowed?

I have nothing against farmers, but I do not understand how they can get away with these things.

At times, my life is in their hands.
