Fall Sports In Full Swing As Squires Tennis Team Gets Win

SYRACUSE — Played a day after it was scheduled to, the Manchester boys tennis team nabbed season-opening 4-1 win at Wawasee Tuesday night. Rain forced the match to be moved from Monday to Tuesday, but the traveling Squires didn’t seem to mind. While Wawasee’s Kyler Love was getting a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles, the rest of the Warriors struggled, failing to force a third set on any of the remaining four courts. On the other two singles courts, Manchester’s Max Karg won 6-3, 6-2 and Brayton Spann was a 6-0, 6-1 victor at No. 3. At doubles, Manchester’s No. 1 tandem of Dalton Day and Riley Woods won 6-2, 6-4 and Noah Cain and Morgan Metzger won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. The 0-1 Wawasee Warriors are back at home today, hosting Lakeland, while the 1-0 Squires host Maconaquah Thursday. MANCHESTER 4, WAWASEE 1 SINGLES: No. 1 — Kyler Love (W) def. The Whitko boys tennis team opened its season with a 4-1 loss at Fort Wayne Northrop Tuesday evening. In the team loss, Whitko’s Seth Patrick did get an individual victory at No. 2 singles, winning 6-2, 6-4. The Wildcats get back on the courts Thursday at home against Westview. Traveling to Bremen for its first match of the season, the Tippecanoe Valley boys tennis team lost 4-1 Tuesday evening. Valley’s lone individual victory came from Nick Kindig, who won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. The 0-1 Vikings host North Judson Thursday. The Warsaw cross country teams combined efforts for Tuesday’s Hokum Karem Invitational at Fort Wayne’s Schoaff Park. Running as a complete team, Warsaw finished second to Northridge after the tandem of Ellis Coon and Ashley Erba finished first, but were disqualified because of a flag violation. Coon and Erba’s time of 25:52 would have set a record at the meet, but was nullified due to the violation. Both teams will be at Saturday’s Huntington North Invitational, which will be at Huntington University. The Wawasee boys cross country team got its season started right Tuesday at Fairfield, beating all three of its opponents. Finishing with five guys in the top seven, the Warriors defeated Bremen (19-40), Fairfield (19-36) and NorthWood (15-40). Leading the way for Wawasee was Reid Stichter, who finished first overall in a time of 17:28.8. The Warriors will be at Saturday’s Prairie Heights Invitational. The Wawasee girls cross country team picked up two losses at Fairfield Tuesday, but posted one. In a three-team meet, the Lady Warriors fell to Bremen 25-30 and hosting Fairfield 22-38, but defeated NorthWood 27-30. Wawasee’s Jen Slabaugh finished second overall with a time of 21:24. The Wawasee girls golf team posted a pair of wins Tuesday at Maxwelton Golf Club in Syracuse. Shooting a 194, the Lady Warriors bested Mishawaka Marian (206) and West Noble (228). Wawasee’s Elizabeth Jackson and Mikala Mawhorter shared medalist honors, as both shot a 47 on the par-36 course. In the season-opening victory, Whitko was led by Whitney Hobbs’ 13 kills and Meghan Peters’ 20 assists. For LCA, Frani Gerst had 12 kills and Kathleen Sands posted six blocks.
