BOURBON - In search of their first win of the season against Northern States Conference opponent Glenn, the Triton Trojans put themselves behind the eight ball early and could never dig out of a 23-5 first quarter deficit.
The Falcons were in flight early and scorching from the field. Glenn hit 10 of its first 17 shots of the game to garner the 23-5 lead.
Glenn's Brandon Egger scored nine of his 12 points in the first quarter and also added seven rebounds.
Egger and the rest of the Falcon squad dominated the glass to the tune of a 30-21 rebounding advantage. Egger's frontcourt running mate Joe Curtis added five rebounds and scored 11 points.
Brian Bogard quickly put the Falcons up 4-0 to start the game on two layups that came from precise ball movement and Bogard's ability to move without the ball.
Triton head coach Mike McBride called a timeout with 56 seconds in an attempt to sure up the defense and settle his kids down.
Glenn led 6-0 before Triton got on the board with a Cory McClarnon three-pointer with 6:04 left in the the opening period.
That's as close as the Trojans could draw.
The Falcons outscored Triton 17-2 over the remainder of the first quarter and never looked back.
Over a span of time that stretched from midway through the first quarter to the 1:23 mark of the second, Glenn went on a 21-0 run. Once again, a Cory McClarnon three-pointer stopped the bleeding.
The Trojans managed just eight points in the first 16 minutes, six of which came from McClarnon.
The 5-foot-8 guard was one of the lone bright spots for Triton. He finished with a game-high 14 points. That total comprised 58 percent of the Trojans' scoring against Glenn.
Facing a 32-8 deficit to start the second half, Chad Kauffman came off the bench to start and provided a brief spark for the Trojans.
Kauffman nailed a jumper with 6:05 left in the third quarter to give the Triton faithful one of its few moments to cheer. It was Kauffman's only two points of the evening.
The Trojans did improve on offense in the second half, scoring eight points in both third and fourth quarters to equal their first half total.
Lane Davis and Kirk Bates scored three points while Troy McIntyre scored two.
Triton's future was on display as Bates is a full-time junior varsity player while Troy McIntyre is a freshman.
In fact, Triton boasts just two seniors on its squad with McClarnon and Brandon Garey the only two upperclassmen.
Much of the Trojans' early trouble came from an inability to hang on to the basketball. Triton committed eight first quarter turnovers to just one from Glenn. For the game, Triton committed 22 turnovers to 16 by Glenn, seven of which came in the second quarter.
Triton's 24 points Saturday night were its lowest point total in a game since before the '93-'94 season, the last year records are available.
The Trojans, 0-10 overall and 0-2 in the NSC, look for their first win against Culver Jan. 15 with an 8 p.m. tipoff scheduled. Culver defeated Triton 61-58 in the consolation of the Caston Tournament Dec. 23
