Fair-goers Receive Sun Safety Education From Health Organizations.

Posted
Fair-goers who attended the Kosciusko County Community Fair on Kiddie Day were met with a reminder of sun safety.

The K21 Health Foundation teamed up with members of the Cancer Consortium at Live Well Kosciusko to provide fair-goers with sun safety education and UV wristbands. The wristbands change color when exposed to UV rays to provide a reminder to take sun care precautions. In addition, the Lutheran Health Network provided several free sunscreen stations for use around the fairgrounds.

According to a news release from Live Well, there are five things to remember for sun safety: wear sunscreen, wear a hat, wear sunglasses, wear a shirt with sleeves to cover more skin and stay in the shade when possible.

When applying sunscreen, use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30,  use an ounce of sunscreen every time you apply, and reapply every two hours.

Approximately 5.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually in the United States. It’s important to protect children from sun exposure, the release states. Just one sunburn increases the risk for developing skin cancer and 80% of sun exposure occurs before the age of 18.

The Cancer Consortium at Live Well Kosciusko works to implement the Indiana Cancer Control Plan in Kosciusko County.  There are four areas of focus, which include primary prevention, early detection, treatment and survivorship.
