Friday's deadline to apply for the Kosciusko County Fair Queen Pageant came and went with only 10 contestants seeking the crown.
The lack of interest, according to fair officials, appears to be from the misconception that the contest is based on a penny-a-vote system. The pageant is actually a judged contest, with participants scored on interview/professional wear (50 points); sportswear - no swimsuits (20 points); and evening gown (30 points). Contestants do not need to be 4-H members.
In hopes of getting additional applicants, the deadline has been extended to June 16. The pageant will be staged at 7:30 p.m. June 20 in the Shrine Building.
The 1997 queen will receive a $1,000 scholarship, tiara, trophy, sash, 1997 queen T-shirt and miscellaneous gifts. The winner of the local competition will participate in the 1997 Indiana State Fair Pageant on Aug. 16, the Indiana State Festivals Pageant in November and other pageants as they become available.
