Fair Board Confronts Erosion Problem

Posted

The waters of Winona Lake beat against the shoreline tirelessly.

That wave action has caused severe erosion along the north side of the lake where the Kosciusko County Fair Board maintains 1,300 feet of shore.

"We've got a problem," said fair board member Frank Rhoades. "We're interested in taking care of our property but we've got limited funding."

Summertime water levels cover up a major erosion problem, especially near Fairlane Channel, on the west side of the fairgrounds. Once the winter water levels are reached, the severe drop-off is evident.

Plans are to cover the shore near the channel with a durable cloth and pile rocks on top of it. This should effectively stop the problem.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District have looked at the site and made recommendations.

Rocks as well as monetary donations are needed to start repairs, Rhoades said.

The board plans to apply for a Lakes and River Enhancement Found grant, but approval isn't guaranteed.

Anyone interested in providing services or making donations can call the fair office at 574-269-1823.
