FLINT, Mich. - F. Virginia Stimer, 81, died April 19, 2010, in her residence in Flint, Mich., of pancreatic cancer.
She received her RN degree from Harper Hospital, Detroit, Mich., and later graduated from Greenville College, Ill., with both BS and BA degrees. Her graduate work included master's degrees from the University of Colorado Boulder and Azusa Pacific University, and a degree in midwifery from Bethesda Hospital, Sydney, Australia. She also received seminary training from Nazarene Theological Seminary and was a licensed Church of the Nazarene minister.
She served 30 years as a medical missionary in Papua New Guinea under the Church of the Nazarene, where she did general nursing and also served at various times as director of nursing at Kudjip Nazarene Hospital and clinics, teaching principal of Nazarene College of Nursing, supervisor/advisor to the Papua National Church and was secretary for seven years of PNG medical council. She received a medal from the government of Papua New Guinea for her contributions to medical care for the nationals.
Retiring to Flint, she continued to serve those around her with extensive involvement in her church and community.
Surviving are two sisters, Loraine (and spouse Bill) Engelberth, Pierceton, and Jan (and spouse Don) Barbersek, Taylorsville, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Beverly (and spouse Marion) Stimer, North Branch, Mich.; 12 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, W. Scott and Frances Corbin Stimer; four brothers, David, Wymon, Marion and James; a sister, Anna May "Mel" Vickroy; and two nephews.
A memorial service will be Saturday at First Church of the Nazarene, G-3560 Beecher Road, Flint, MI 48532.
