Expensive Medicine

Editor, Times-Union:

Boy, did I have an awakening.

I needed a single 5 mg generic pill before I was to take a test at a hospital. My doctor called the order in to my regular pharmacy. Since it was a single generic pill, I wanted to pay cash and not turn it in to my insurance, which has a $10 co-pay. Their policy is to charge $11.99 for not charging insurance and $10 co-pay if using insurance. I called another pharmacy in town and their policy is to charge $10.99 when not charging insurance. I then called another pharmacy and their policy is to charge $5.99 when not charging to insurance and for cash payment. The answer from all of them was the same, even when only one cheap generic pill is ordered.

Am I the only one in the dark about how our medicine bills are handled? It seems that if our insurance isn't robbing us, now the local pharmacy is. Something is wrong with this picture. It's no wonder medicine is so expensive.
