Expand The Draft

Posted

Editor, Times-Union:
I have debated on writing this letter because nobody would understand my letter if they are under 70 years old.
A History Lesson
I thought when President Nixon did away with the draft and military service to a volunteer system, it was a great idea. (I was in the draft zone and the Vietnam Conflict was still being fought.) I was wrong. President Nixon should have expanded the draft, not eliminate it.
What I mean by expanding the draft is by making both men and women are eligible for the draft. Also, the draft would expand in different areas, also the Peace Corp, America Corp, Conservation Corps and military service.
I am reminded what John F. Kenned (JFK) said in his inaugural speech, “Ask not what the country can do for you, but ask what you can do to make our country better.” (I’m paraphrasing his words)
Only you would know, if you made America better or not.
