Editor, Times-Union: I think it is very important to exercise. How much TV watching or video game playing have you been doing lately? You may not realize the importance of exercising until you need to go on a diet. Instead, let’s get up off the couch and go exercise!
First, it’s important to exercise because it helps you stay healthy. When you exercise, you burn calories and cholesterol. Not exercising causes you to gain weight and practice laziness. It becomes a bad habit for life, and it’s hard to break it. I know one of my teachers at my school goes and works out at a gym. Even if you’re young, it’s still a good idea to exercise because you gain muscle and become stronger.
Another good reason is that exercising gives you energy. I know whenever I’m exercising I feel good and energetic afterward. If you aren’t exercising, you feel tired and weak. Sometimes (like over Christmas break) when I’m not exercising, I feel weak and tired.
Third, it is required of you to take care of yourself. God commands in His Word that you need to take care of yourself. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 it says, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” This verse means to me that we need to honor God with our bodies and take care of them. The next time you’re tempted to be a “couch potato”, remember you’re not making a good decision, and put the potato chips away. Let’s make it a goal to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. We can become a healthier community and honor God.
