Even Looking Ahead, Triton's Volleyball Team Beats LaVille

BOURBON - The Triton girls varsity volleyball team did not play its best match of the season against conference opponent LaVille on Tuesday, but it ended the evening with a win to improve its record to 13-6 overall and 2-2 in the NSC.

"It seemed like we just looked past this game because we're excited about our Blue River Tournament this weekend," said Triton coach Gayle Perry. "We played really flat, and LaVille came to play tonight.

"We can't play like that Thursday against Argos and still expect to do well on Saturday. We must stay focused."

In the 15-7, 15-8 win over LaVille, Triton proved that teamwork leads to victory.

Kendra Blackford led the team with 15 assists, 10 points and one ace, while Jamey Bell added eight kills. Emily Yankovich and Brandie Ganshorn each contributed four kills, and Kelli Hackett pitched in for five digs.

"Our subs played a pretty good game," Perry said. "We have some sophmores who played well and got some court time."

The Trojans are ranked eighth in the state Class A volleyball poll, but they have not let it go to their heads.

"It's an honor to be ranked, but now we must earn it and keep it," said Perry. "Matches are not won because you are ranked, you must earn it every night."

The Trojans will travel to Muncie this weekend to play in the Blue River Tournament, where they will compete against three other state-ranked teams. (Wapahani No. 2, Michigan City Marquette No. 3, and Blue River No. 6). #

Like her players, Perry is looking forward to the tournament. "This weekend will be a good experience because four teams in the top ten will be competing," she said. "We can see where we fit in."

Triton will host Argos on Thursday at 6 p.m. and travel to Muncie Saturday for the Blue River Tournament.
