Evans Named County’s November Veteran Of The MonthWarsaw native Larry L. Evans was named the Kosciusko County Veteran of the Month Tuesday by the commissioners.

Evans was born Nov. 14, 1946, in Warsaw, to Ralph and Betty Evans. He grew up 4 miles south of Warsaw, where he attended Claypool schools for 12 years and graduated in 1965.

Evans would go on to enlist in the United States Air Force on April 21, 1966.

After arriving at Homestead Air Force Base, he was joined by his high school sweetheart, Joyce Starner, and they married on the base July 20, 1966.

His military occupational specialty was vehicle body repairman, and he was stationed with the 354th trans squadron at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. Evans spent two years and nine months there before being reassigned to Kunsan Air Force Base in South Korea, where he stayed for one year.

Evans made the grade of sergeant E-4 before completing his required enlistment and was discharged April 20, 1972.

After he returned home from Kansan, South Korea, he spent the next 11 years working for NIPSCO Gas and Electric Co.

However, Evans’ real dream and passion since his childhood was to be an auctioneer. He pursued his dream and in 1973 got his auctioneer’s license. Then, in 1981, the opportunity arose for him to become a full-time auctioneer.

Evans sold five or six auto auctions a week for 35 years, working all over in places like Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids and Parma, Mich., along with working in Fort Wayne and New Haven, and doing auctions in Kosciusko County.

With 47 years of auction experience, Evans still does auctions today for Metzger Auction Service.

Evans is the father of two daughters, Angela and her husband Joe, and his other daughter, Debra. He has five grandchildren:?David, Matthew, Jacob, Jamie and Jessie; and three great-grandchildren: Bentley, Alice and Julian.

Evans was emotional while being named the November Veteran of the Month and thanked his wife.
