ETNA GREEN - Members of the Founders Day Committee presented the tentative schedule of events Tuesday to the Etna Green Town Council.
Plans for the town's sesquicentennial celebration include a race, concessions, a parade, raffles, movies, bands, a bake sale, demonstrations, townwide garage sales and an ice cream social. The events will take place July 4 through 6 throughout the town.
"We hope to have a very good turnout," said Everett Carroll. "We want maximum people in town."
Mr. and Mrs. Russell Binkley were chosen as parade marshals based on the belief they are the oldest living residents of Etna Green, according to committee member Jennifer Hefner.
Along with the changes in the annual July 4 festival to commemorate the founding of the town, the committee is hoping to change the parade route, a task that must be approved by the Indiana Department of Transportation because the route travels along Ind. 19. The new route would start at Pleasant Street and go straight down Ind. 19 from Heritage Park. The parade theme is "Through the Years," and three high school bands have already been confirmed to participate.
The possibility of having a queen contest, as well as other events, is being tossed about.
T-shirts advertising the celebration are available at most businesses in town and from Alice Waggoner. The cost is $10 for shirts sizes small through extra large and $12.50 for shirts sizes 2X and 3X.
In regular council business, Eileen Hall was voted to remain council president and Jay Rigdon will continue as town attorney.
In other matters, the council approved $1,400 from Economic Development Income Tax funds to purchase a bronze plaque to be mounted on the gazebo at Remembrance Park. The plaque will serve as a thank-you to all those who helped make the park a reality.
The council also approved up to $1,000 for repairing the town bucket truck. The work will be done by Klingerman Welding.
The Etna Green Town Council meets at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the fire station meeting room. Council members are Eileen Hall, Jeff Klinefelter and Andy Cook.
