WINONA LAKE - The Village at Winona will sponsor an Empty Bowls event Nov. 5 at Rodeheaver Auditorium in Winona Lake. The second annual event will be from noon to 2 p.m. Last year’s event raised $4,500 that was distributed to Combined Community Services, Salvation Army, and Our Father’s House, according to Deena Cutshall, Pottery Bayou. During the event, guests are served a soup lunch in a handcrafted bowl in exchange for a cash donation to fight hunger. They are asked to keep their bowl as a reminder of the meal's purpose. Every time a person takes a bowl from a cupboard, they will be reminded that someone's bowl is always empty, they helped alleviate hunger and can choose to do so any time. Bowls for the event were handcrafted by Kosciusko County high school and middle school art students, local potters and other artists. The soup for the event is donated by 1000 Park Bak-Cafe. Soup includes chicken noodle and vegetable soup. Empty Bowls is an independently organized worldwide project established by the non-profit Imagine/Render group. The project seeks to provide support for organizations that combat hunger while also promoting awareness about local hunger issues. Since its beginning, as a high school arts project in Michigan in 1990, Empty Bowls events have raised millions of dollars toward ending hunger. Tickets to the event are $20, and are available for purchase at several Village at Winona shops including 1000 Park Bak-Cafe, Cerulean, Pottery Bayou, the Winona Mercantile and Winona Woods.
