Emergency Routes

This letter has nothing to do with politics. It is not directed at any individual. It is not an emotional outburst. It is merely a plea for some answers to a question that has been plaguing me for over a year.

About a year ago I noticed signs in both the westbound and eastbound lanes of Center Street as well as the northbound and southbound lanes of Detroit Street - "Emergency Evacuation Routes" the signs say.

As threats continue to mount regarding the safety of all citizens - terror attacks, extreme weather-related events, etc., I believe I need some information so that I can protect myself, my loved ones and my friends.

Exactly what kind of emergencies might arise that would propel me to one of these evacuation routes? Which direction am I supposed to go: north, south, east or west? What am I supposed to do once I leave the safe (or unsafe) confines of my fair city?

I'm sure I can rule out tsunamis or hurricanes. A tornado threat would require me to stay put.

A nuclear blast would end my need for answers. Just what kind of emergency have I not considered?

Someone please answer me. I'd hate to have to call 911, whose lines would most likely be jammed in the likelihood of a pending disaster.

I need a plan.
