Gov. Mitch Daniels proclaimed March 6-12 as Severe Weather Awareness Week.
The National Weather Service, in conjunction with the Indiana State Police, Indiana State Emergency Management, the Indiana School System, the broadcast media across Indiana and amateur radio operators will conduct statewide tests of communication systems March 9 between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., and 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Should actual severe weather be a threat March 9, the test will be held March 10.
The Kosciusko County Emergency Management Agency is urging all county fire departments, towns, businesses and families to test their individual systems when the county 911 Central Dispatch Center sends the alerts out on that date. The fire departments and towns should sound their sirens both times. Businesses are asked to initiate their systems and have employees go to their designated shelters at least during the first test. The second test is a time for most families to review where each family member will go for protection from severe weather.
The goal of Severe Weather Preparedness Week is to better educate people about the hazards of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and to help everyone be prepared should severe weather occur.
