Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory crews were busy Monday afternoon attempting to locate a possible gas leak in the Anchorage Road area on Warsaw’s northside. Three calls came in shortly after 3:30 p.m. of a smell of gas near Shamrock Mobile Home Park. Crews searched the area of Anchorage Road, Biomet Drive and the new Meijer location. Crews then responded to a call of a gas leak at Radio Shack in the Walmart Plaza. Fire crews also evactuated Shoe Show for about 45 minutes before releasing both businesses to continue operating, but Radio Shack chose to remain closed. It wasn’t until a fourth call came in that an actual gas leak was discovered. That leak was located at Heron Preserve Apartments behind Kohl’s. Fire crews arrived to find NIPSCO already on scene repairing a gas leak. According to Rob Barker, Warsaw-Wayne battalion chief, the NIPSCO crewman was almost finished repairing the leak when fire crews arrived. The NIPSCO repairman had vented off some gas to make repairs. The caller was a renter at Heron that was unware of NIPSCO’s presence. According to Baker, the reports of the smell of gas in the areas around Radio Shack and Anchorage Road were unrelated to the Heron Preserve Apartment gas leak, and possibly caused by a truck passing by on U.S. 30.
