BOURBON – Elsie Kathleen Kirby Hanes, formerly of Bourbon, died June 22, 2012, at The Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee, Florence, S.C.

She was born Dec. 4, 1932, in Pacolet Mills, S.C., to MayBelle Seay and Archie Kirby. On May 24, 1944, in Laguna Beach, Calif., she married Lt. Charles E. Hanes, who preceded in her death.

She attended schools in South Carolina and graduated from Fair Forest High School in 1939.

As a World War II veteran, she served in the U.S. Navy WAVES, enlisting in December 1942. She was in the second class of WAVES to be accepted for duty and received training at Iowa State Teachers College, the U.S. naval base at Memphis, Tenn., and the U.S. naval base at Pensacola, Fla.

She was active in church and served in many offices.

Surviving are her children: Larry (and spouse Lynn) Hanes, South Carolina; Dr. Michael (and spouse Madilyn) Hanes, Pennsylvania; and Patricia (and Dr. Louis) Furmanski, Oklahoma; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Kirby Plexico; and two brothers, Talmadge Kirby and Billy M. Kirby, both of South Carolina. She was preceded by a brother.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Bourbon, with the Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry officiating. Burial will be at Sand Ridge Cemetery, Bourbon.

Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, Bourbon, is in charge of the arrangements.
