FORT WAYNE - Elmer Lewis, 88, of Warsaw, and formerly of Akron, died March 1, 2010, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born April 7, 1921, in Chicago, Ill., to Michael and Lena Goodman Lewis. On Aug. 22, 1948, he married Jeanette Magazine of Warsaw, who survives.

After their wedding, he began working for his father-in-law, Abe Magazine, at Magazine Coal and Rags, Warsaw. He would later go on to found Lewis Salvage Co. (now Lewis Salvage Corp. of Warsaw) in nearby Akron. His friends and family will remember him for his work ethic, sly sense of humor and his enjoyment of small things, like a good, hot cup of coffee. All of which are captured and taught through his favorite saying, "If it works, don't fix it." He was a member of Congregation B'nai Jacob Synagogue.

Also surviving are four sons: Sidney (and spouse Yvonne); Kim (and spouse Shelly); Michael (and spouse Rita); and Mooch (and spouse Barbara); grandchildren: Justin (and fiancee Marie Weiss); Tyler (and spouse Michelle); Paige (and spouse Aaron) Martin; Abby (and spouse Jason) Tomcsi; Michael (and fiancee Sarah Lafferty); and Elizabeth, Cary, Jason and Kelly Grubb; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Lena; a brother, Leo; and sisters, Esther, Rose and Dorothy.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Jewish Cemetery, Fort Wayne

D.O. McComb & Sons, 6301 Fairfield Ave., Fort Wayne, is in charge of arrangements.
