Elk. Central Blanks Warsaw Kickers

Warsaw's boys soccer team opened its season with a Thursday 1-0 loss to Elkhart Central, a 17-1-1 team last season.

The Elkhart squad dominated the first half of play with seven shots on goal against two for Warsaw. Brent Melvin scored the lone goal midway through the first half on an assist from Tyson Stutzman. Elkhart finished with 13 shots on goal, six from Melvin.

Juan Garcia had two shots on goal for Warsaw. Rudy Ramirez had 11 saves in the goal for the Tigers.

Warsaw hosts South Bend Adams at the CCAC at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

• Girls Soccer

Warsaw 1, Elkhart Central 1

At Elkhart, Warsaw got a goal early in the second period as the Tigers picked up a tie in the season opener.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, Warsaw got a goal from Rachel Buhrt to knot the score.

In junior varsity action, Warsaw won 4-0 behind a pair of goals from Courtney Brubaker. Norma Lopez and Megan Faas also scored goals for the Tigers. Wednesday, the junior varsity lost to Penn 2-0.

After the Kingsmen scored twice in the first 22 minutes, the Tigers shut them down the rest of the way.

Warsaw (0-0-1) will host Argos Saturday at 1 p.m.

East Noble 3, Wawasee 3

At Kendallville, Wawasee's girls soccer team opened its season Thursday by finishing in a tie with East Noble.

Katie Brown scored two goals and Alex Heckaman one for Wawasee.

Wawasee, 0-0-1, is at Bethany Christian at 7 p.m. Saturday.

• Volleyball

Triton Over Oregon-Davis 15-7, 15-13

At Hamlet, Kendra Blackford dished out 16 assists and Emily Yankovich had seven kills as Triton defeated Oregon-Davis in straight sets 15-7, 15-13 Thursday.

Missy Nifong recorded four aces and Brandi Ganshorn added four kills in the victory.

In junior varsity action, Triton won 15-3, 15-11. Betsy Salyer and Ashley Boardman each had four kills as the team improved to 1-1.

Triton (1-1) will host the Triton Tournament Saturday at 10 a.m. featuring Bethany Christian, Hebron, West Central, Frontier and Tri-County.

At Goshen, Wawasee's volleyball team fell to 0-2 with a Thursday loss to Fairfield (1-1).

Jen Mason led Wawasee with four kills. Sara Frantz led with eight assists, and Danielle Powell led with eight digs.

Fairfield won the junior varsity match 12-15, 18-16, 15-9. Shanna Zolman paced Wawasee (0-2) with 13 kills, while teammate Candice Brown had 13 assists.

Wawasee is at Lakeland at 6 p.m. Monday.

At Albion, Tippecanoe Valley's volleyball team improved to 2-0 with a Thursday win over Central Noble.

Valley's Tiffany Cunningham went 10-for-10 serving with two aces. Carissa Parker had 13 assists, while Jennifer Studebaker had three kills and three blocks. Cunningham also had four digs.

Valley's junior varsity team improved to 2-0 with a 15-3, 15-8 win over Central Noble. Valley's junior varsity team competes in the Plymouth Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Valley's varsity team meets Winamac Monday. The junior varsity match starts at 6 p.m.

Manchester 5, Maconaquah 0

At North Manchester, the Squires varsity and junior varsity boys tennis teams combined to go 10-0 Thursday against Maconaquah.

Nate Little, Michael Good and Matt Purdy won singles matches in straight sets.

Manchester, 1-0, hosts Bishop Dwenger at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
