For those looking to get rid of old electronics, starting April 1 it will become cheaper.
During Tuesday's Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District board meeting, director Sue Studebaker announced that because of a new contract, the KC Recycling Deport, 220 S. Union St., Warsaw, will lower the cost of recycling electronics by more than half.Starting April 1, the rate for electronics will drop from .17 cents per pound to .08 per pound for items such as computers, CD players, VCRs and DVD players.
"Anything with a circuit board," said Studebaker. "We'll take."
The new contract with Creative Recycling allowed the cost to drop.
Even with the lower fee, Studebaker said the depot will save between $900 to $1,000 per load they take out.
In 2009, the depot took out more than six loads of electronics meaning if business in 2010 is comparable to 2009, the depot could save $6,000.
The depot recycled 95,000 pounds of electronics last year.
In other business, the board approved the purchase and installation of a new garage door at the depot.
The new door will come with a door opener.
Board members Brad Jackson and Bob Conley noted that the cost of a garage door opener would be much cheaper than any potential workman's compensation claim should someone hurt themselves opening the garage door.
Mike's Garage Door Service will be installing the new door.
Studebaker also told the board that March is a busy month with programs.
The depot also will have two booths at this weekend's Home & Garden Show at the YMCA Racquet Center.
