Election Rhetoric

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

I have been watching, reading and listening to a lot of election rhetoric, and want to share a couple observations.

No. 1 Fear is Relative.

There is the over $250,000/year crowd, "After 2011 by tax cut may not be renewed. I am afraid I will have to (Gulp!) drive my foreign luxury car for two years. Oh, no!"

Then the over $100,000/year crowd, "I may lose so much value in the college fund, I am afraid my kid will (Gulp! Sigh!) have to attend a state university. Oh no!

Then there is the under $50,000/year crowd, "My kids lost their medicaid insurance when I got a raise. I had to pay for an $80 office visit and an antibiotic today. (Gulp, gulp, gut churn) I'm afraid I can't buy groceries this week. Oh no!"

Anyway, you get the picture.

By the way, a personal note to Senator Lindsay Graham: I call this "Reality Based Whining." You can quote me

No. 2 The label "pal," "friend" or "supporter" is relative.

There is the Bill Ayers kind of "pal" who was a '60s war protester gone whacked. Some of you do remember '60s war protesting, don't you? College sit-ins, Kent State, spitting on returning veterans, the whole nine yards. That's good. I knew everyone couldn't have been in Hanoi being tortured. Anyway ... (Death Count - three of their own guys. Didn't say they were smart! Cost to us the taxpayers - millions or possibly billions in today's dollars, not sure. It was 40 years ago.)

Then, there is the Keating kind of "friend" who was an '80s banker who served five years for his role in the savings and loan scandal. Senator McCain was the only one of five Senators investigated, with a close personal friendship, who made several family trips with Keating, and had to pay some back when the stuff hit the fan. This actually happened, I saw it on TV. (Death Count - zero. Cost to us- $3 billion, for just that one bank.)

Then, there is the McCain sort of "supporter" for our current president. Senator McCain supports him 90 percent of the time, "that's when he's not workin' hard with the rest of us 'Hockey- Moms' and 'Joe Six-Packs' or huntin' for those 'Gosh darn' weapons of mass destruction or bein' all Surgey." (wink)

Now that I think about it, Senator McCain's middle name is Sydney. I'll bet they are hiding the fact he's one of those "down under" Aussie's - don't know if I can trust him now (Death count - over 4,000 of our finest in Iraq alone. Cost to us - several trillion, not counting the trillion he started with).

Call me crazy, I think I'll vote for the smart guy with brown skin and the ideas, if for no other reason needed, than he can't mess up worse than "That One."

It's like my son said the first day of preschool, when I inquired as to his relatively new "pottying experience." He innocently said, "Me and the boy with the brown butt went together."

Maybe we should lower the voting age to 3?
