After more months without a president, one of the Big 3 orthopedic companies in Warsaw named one Monday. DePuy Orthopaedics named Andrew Ekdahl its new president, the company announced Monday. Ekdahl has been with the company for more than 20 years, where he has worked in areas including orthopaedics, trauma, sports medicine, neurosciences and spine. Ekdahl fills the position left vacant by David Floyd, who resigned March 4. Floyd’s resignation came on the heels of a recall by DePuy of the ASR XL Acetabular hip system last August. The recall resulted from researchers finding that 13 percent of patients need repeat operations or revision surgery. The company took a $280 million charge in the fourth quarter to pay for the recall. The company has dealt with hundreds of lawsuits from the recall and racked up nearly $1 billion in legal expenses, according to massdevice.com Prior to his appointment as president of DePuy Orthopaedics, Ekdahl was franchise vice president, DePuy Europe, Middle East and Africa. He has held positions in sales, marketing and distribution in the United States, Canada and abroad. According to a DePuy representative, Ekdahl will be transitioning to his new role during July, while also relocating to the area, and is slated for a Aug. 1 start in his new role. Ekdahl received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Manitoba in Canada and a master’s in business administration from Wilfred Laurier University in Canada.
