Edwin S. Purrington, 93, of Warsaw, passed away at 6:42 a.m. Nov. 5, 2012, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
He was born Dec. 16, 1918, in Chicago, Ill., to Franklin L. and Ruth Stedman Purrington. He married Barbara Shelton, who survives.
A resident of Warsaw since 1977, he was a volunteer fireman for Winona Lake and served as fire chief. He was the director of Winona School of Photography, served as town manager of Winona Lake along with being the building inspector for the community. He also was manager of the Ford Motor Co. Photography Department and worked for Life Magazine as a photographer.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer during World War II as a photographer in the Pacific Theater in the photography unit. He attended Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
Also surviving are three sons: Edwin Jr. (and spouse Shirley) Purrington, Fort Worth, Texas; James (and spouse Sandy) Purrington, Whitmore Lake, Mich.; and Frank Purrington, Dearborn, Mich.; a stepson, Jeffrey J. (and spouse Cynthia) Shelton, Warsaw; a stepdaughter, Cynthia B. (and spouse Terry) Walsh, Conroe, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Franklin L Purrington, Shingletown, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and two stepchildren.
A memorial service will be at noon Friday at Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church with Pastor Erik Ohman officiating and with military honors at a later date. Burial will be at a later date in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Calling is one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, 2290 Provident Court, Warsaw, is in charge of arrangements.
